Get a TRUE feel for western Queensland when you head to Charleville for a locum sono stint!
Located in the heart of the mulga country of south west Queensland, Charleville is a rip roaring outback experience often up for grabs on our locum jobs board! We’d suggest flying (unless you’re doing a lap of Australia) as it’s over 8.5 hours from Brisbane in a car. The health service there supports a population of over 3000 people and has Queensland’s largest Royal Flying Doctor service base. Makes for an interesting caseload!
Around town
Because of its low residual night light and frequently cloudless skies, Charleville is home to Queensland’s largest planetarium, the Cosmos Centre! Head there day or night to word up on all things stars, planets and celestial objects.
Sounds a little out of place, but I guess that’s the point…there is a World War II USA Secret Base you can visit. Novel!
The Charleville Bilby Experience very kindly switches the bilby’s nighttime to a human’s daytime so you can go and check out their nighttime activities without missing the 8pm bedtime curfew.
Talk up the ‘outback true feel’ bit
We could keep listing other bits and bobs (mostly buildings of heritage value), but really what we think is special about Charleville is not found in an entry ticket or on a history laden information placard.
These types of centres are chock-a-block full of Aussie characters, some of whom have spent their whole life in the region. Take note of the difference between a busy metro health service and a remote, all encompassing health hub. Get to know not only the dedicated health care workers, but also grazier Will who drove 4 hours this morning for his abdo scan. What a different life they live!
The people are the real event of these types of locum spots. You won’t find them listed on a google search of what to do in the region but by gosh are they worth the time. Take note of how they live life. Listen to their stories. What an adventure and what an amazing learning experience!

Feedback from sonos prior
Charleville had a real outback feel. Small town, friendly people. My partner enjoyed fishing and yabbying in the rivers while I was working. It was old school with paper calendar and worksheets and slow computers…it didn’t matter though, the laid back place made it a really nice place to work. SL – locum sono 2024
