Location Feature – Port Lincoln

Tempted to keep this secret to herself…we twisted Isla Lucas’ arm until she spilt the beans on her recent locum in the isolated corner of South Australia. Short version – put it on your MUST SEE LIST!

What did you enjoy the most about your placement?

I had a BLAST in Port Lincoln – it’s incredible for such a small town. Just 15000 residents but sure packs a punch. Super friendly and welcoming staff. They are just so happy you’re there and go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. Familiar IT systems too, so it was an easy slide into work. Also, one hour lunch breaks – WHAT ON EARTH!? Never in my time as a rad or sono have I had such luxury. I went for a swim at the beach almost every day!

What did you enjoy about the town/region?

OMG where to start?! The seafood. It is seafood capital so the seafood is FRESH and cheap! So much local produce here too, the Eyre Peninsula is a melting pot for locally made food, wine, gin, cosmetics etc.  The beaches in Port Lincoln are amazing, they have a shark net swimming pool off the jetty which was a regular haunt for me.  It’s also the ONLY place in Australia that does cage diving with great white sharks, which is the whole reason I wanted to go there, and it did not disappoint. They were magnificant!!

What hidden gems did you discover?

SO MANY! Boston Bean Coffee Co for coffee and beans. Coffin Bay (just 35kms away) for oyster shucking lessons and tours, delicious food too at Oyster HQ. West Coast Gin Distillery plus Jump Ship Brewing do yummy local gins and beers. The Fresh Fish Place for all your fresh, raw and cooked seafood delicacies! Port Lincoln Bakery for yummy banh mi at lunch. Line & Label Restaurant at the Peter Teakle Winery is a beautiful spot for a fancy dinner on the hilltop. The Parnkalla Trail is a great long walking trail that follows the coastline around Port Lincoln, perfect start or end to the day…with a swim of course!
