Location Feature – Armidale

Need a regional refresh and some fresh country air? Look no further than Armidale, the bustling hub of the New South Wales Northern Tablelands.  Bursting with first class food, wine, coffee and outdoor, leafy adventures, it’s the perfect place for a moontanned locum sono to explore on the weekends.

Give me the basics

Located midway between Sydney and Brisbane, and only 2 hours from the New South Wales Mid North Coast (think Coffs Harbour), Armidale sits 1000 metres above sea level and is well known for its cool summer breezes and magnificent autumn colours. It has a population punching above 24 000 and houses the University of New England in addition to a large number of school facilities. It is fast becoming known as a thriving foodie hub, with a growing list of high quality cafes, restaurants, breweries and wineries.

What are the local ‘must dos’?

The New England Regional Art Gallery comes highly recommended from all of our intel sources, as does Samurez House and the heritage tour around Armidale itself.  There are lots of interesting local stories that combine with the heritage architecture and numerous cathedrals, school and monuments that decorate the town.  Taste the local flavours at the Armidale Farmers’ Market – a great place to meet some of the local farmers and producers (and of course, taste the cheese!).

For the sono that likes to get outside?

There is PLENTY to keep you busy! Armidale has stunning natural landscapes and caters for all types of outdoor preferences.  If you like to see water moving, check out Ebor Falls or have a picnic and dip at Dangar Falls. Wollomombi Falls is Australia’s second-highest waterfall and is only 30 minutes drive away.  There are National Parks in all directions – Gumbaynggirr NP, Warrabah NP, Guy Fawkes NP, Cathedral Rock NP – this list here gives a great round up to get your nature fix and heart rate pumping. If you’re into mountain biking, there’s also plenty on offer – check out Sport UNE and Armidale Pine Forest trails.

And then don’t forget our taste buds!

How could we?! Restaurants are in abundance – take your pick from The Cottage, Tattersalls, Azka, Manny’s, Signor Vertelli or if you want something more casual, Gold Fish Bowl and this list of cafes for your daily caffeine hit! Breweries and wineries if you are that way inclined: Welders Dog, Dobson’s Distillery, Great Hops Brewery, Petersons Winery and Merilba Winery.
